Sabre: IT LIVES

Just got this bass back from the doctor (Glaser Instruments).

It had almost everything done to it. More specifically- fingerboard planing, refret, fingerboard refin, Plek dress. I also replaced the mute system on the bridge, even though there's a .0001% chance I'll ever actually use it.
I put .40-.95 Sunbeams on it. There was also a rubber stamp of what I'm guessing may have been somebody's band name on the headstock. Took care of that too.

It feels, plays, and sounds great, and I think it's beautiful.

Still working on some electronic issues. Had to replace the jack and a badly gnarled volume pot which looked like it took a massive smack at some point. All I have to do now is get the pickup selector toggle replaced, as it has worn out as well. That should take care of everything.

This bass has seemingly been the victim of a lot of abuse and a few bad ideas somewhere over the course of its 35 years on Earth.

It's really solid and the neck is just to die for. It's also going to scratch my Stingray itch, so I'm less bummed about selling my Ray.

Anyway, the important part- pix:

Nice Matt. Congrats!! I like the Sabre pup config better than the MM single. This is a sweet old bass now.

Dude they crushed it. It plays so so good. And I dig the neck profile. Feels (without measuring) between a jazz & a P, but thinner from front to back. Feels very different to me but very nice. Comfy and fast.

This is the link to the thread on the history of this Sabre:

I think it's cool what you had done to it - it has taken some abuse but it is a really cool bass.

bought it on ebay - someone from soCal. I did have a Facebook chat w Tom Newhouse the original owner - he lives in AZ now. He got the bass new as a gift from his girlfriend/future wife and used it on all of the recordings of the Criminals, The 3 Wild Guys and Attidudes. The reason for the two extra switches was for a wireless transmitter that he put inside the control cavity - I had that removed. The bass has had a lot of use and it shows - which is cool ;)

Gigged with this bass last night. Just played it on a few tunes. It's getting the pickup selector switch replaced in a few days, but I wanted to try it out anyway. I was only able to use one pickup at a time, and not run both simultaneously. It plays and sounds incredible. Each pickup is perfectly capable of holding its own. I can only imagine what it'll sound like with both. This thing is like 3 sledgehammers in one.
