Guys, help me. Very close to buying a new bass. I have $365 in Guitar Center gift cards. And this is what I'm looking at within my price range ($0-$500). I play punk pop, metal, and whatever genre you classify Jack White as.
Squier VM Jazz bass 70's
Schecter Omen 4 (I have yet to see any reviews or play this or anything so I would be going in blind, but I have a Schecter guitar and have nothing but good to say about it)
Ibanez SR300
If I wanted to spend the extra odd amount of dollars I am considering a standard Fender J, but I'd rather spend as little of my own money as possible.

The SR300 is going to give you lots of versatility albeit with a pretty modern tone.
The VM Jazz 70s are great for the dollar amount, sound excellent right off the rack, and are great for upgrades and modding (I've kit-bashed two already).
I have had a few Schecters in the past, they're ok. I honestly haven't tried an Omen for more than 20 seconds in a shop.
If you are considering the Standard Jazz bass, I would just go with the VM Jazz. I find them to be very close to each other in terms of build quality and tone.

Thanks! Also, how does a finished neck stack up against heavy music? Will it work as well as an unfinished rosewood?
