Something does not look right with the fingerboard on the 77 Jazz bass. The neck is bound, but shouldn't it be block markers as opposed to dots?

The seller notes that it is a new Maple Fretboard.

I have an '82 Jazz that has binding and dots, no blocks. It's from the last batch of instruments that Fender built in '81 and '82 using leftover parts from the '70s (my bass has a '78 serial number, but '82 pickup stamps and pot stamps) before they revamped the whole line that debut in '83. For some reason they built bass necks in '82 with binding and dot, no blocks, similar to those in the late '60s.

What throws me off about this one is that the dots seems to be pearloid, not solid black. I don't think those are original and I'm guessing the neck was modified.

About the neck pocket, in my experience that's not a big deal. Once the bolts are tight, that neck is not moving; and about the tone and vibrations transferring through the wood and all that, I just don't think it's relevant. It might not look nice, but I really doubt it really makes a difference tonally.

Nice bass if you ask me, but it's one of those that you have to play before you buy.

Carlos is right about the neck pocket gap. My '74 has a gap and the string alignment stays perfect and the neck never moves. That being said, it's still shitty QC on Fender's part of course.
