Good deal on a MIJ Fender Precision

Post by andrew »

The shipping is included, so that's not a bad deal (though I didn't read the fine print on the auction).

Who was saying they wished they could get a MIJ P-Bass?

I actually was thinkin bout pullin the trigger. but I don't like the look of the chunk out of the back. It looks like the hole for the strap was re-drilled and somthing happened around the original, maybe some major stress. The fact that the hole is re-drilled and there is a long chip out if the back that starts right where that hole was....did it split? what happened?

Yeah, I'd get some clarification from the seller as to what that mark is. It looks to me like the bass was pulled across something and the finish tore off but it'd be wise to check what it's actually about. I hadn't noticed the moved strap buttons.

man, the world sure is full of lefty basses that someone decided to flip to play righty. I've seen a helluva lotta basses with a tell-tale strap button hole in the lower horn.

I get really mad when I see a right-hander playing a flipped lefty... it's not enough that they have like 1000x choices compared to us SPs (southpaws), they gotta take ours too! grrrrrrrrrrr

So that's usually the case when you see the hole re-drilled like that? I thought maybe there was some connection between the re-drilled hole and the long chip out of the back that seems to start right at that point. But that is a good red flag to watch for. If it's been used as a righty I'd want to make sure they haven't also reversed the nut and bridge at some point and then turned them back. That would make the bass a lot less attractive to me.

I do run into righty players that want to try my bass all the time. Many seem to have a fascination with it. Irritating when some ace righty tries it out and then after a minute or 2 he plays it as as well or better than I do :o

Me too! It's one of my biggest pet peeves. I suppose we have Hendrix to blame for that.

Sadly most righty guys are oblivious to the limited selection of lefty basses out there so to them flipping a lefty bass to play it is a novelty, not a necessity as it has been for many a lefty.

Not only did the guy move the lower button, but it looks like he moved the button he moved to the lower horn, too. You can make out what looks to be a 2nd hole in one of the pics. Then, of course, there's that chunk missing. That's a bit much to put up with for $900.

That's more like a $400 bass. Specially because it's the lower-quality series with basswood bodies. My experience with at least 5 MIJs has been that basswood sucks. I had one MIJ made out of alder, and it was AMAZING. But it got stolen. I since have bought/sold many, all basswood, and let them go immediately.

I don't have any problem with basswood. My basswood '04 CIJ 57 reissue rocks and is a pleasure to play.

I was more bothered on this 62 RI that it's been converted to righty and back again. Right handed use could mean other issues with the nut and bridge and overall fret-wear.

The seller seems like a nice guy, we've communicated and he's very forthcoming and no-BS. I may yet do business with him some time in the future.
