Some people just make bad decisions, I always say if you want a Ric Sound get a Ric, if you want a Fender Sound get a Fender.

If someone is interested and you get it for a low price you may be able to remove the mod and get a special pick guard made that would cover up where the P bass Pick up is. The pickguard would have to go all the way up to the edge of the Treble pick up.

I was thinking the same thing Bob. Easy fix and shouldn't hurt the appliance much.

The worst I've seen was many years ago - a rough replacement ali' scratchplate and a MusicMan style pickup. Was a proper old 4000 with chequer binding. Probably the original horseshoe magnet had gotten demagnetised.

The trouble with Ric's is that they look so cool. What do you do if you want a bass with that look but not that sound?

Ya know what though, I bet if a person can get over the fugly mod that bass probably sounds awesome. Adding some P bass wallop to the Ric sound probably kicks butt tone-wise. I bet a player could sculpt a signature tone with that bass.

I bought my 4001 mapleglo in 1978. I was never really happy with the sound I got. I just didn't like the pups. Tried adjusting, etc. Finally about 5 years ago, I bought some of the vintage Ric pups--at least what Ric offered on stock.

The trouble is, to get the pups to fit, we had to do some routing, which worked really well. I hate it that I had to do that mod, but man, those pups brought the bass to life. It's got the Ric sound I was going for.
