Hi all, new joiner here from the UK. I'm a total beginner, got the bass bug and just started having lessons. Currently 'playing' a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass, would like something nicer. Am here to listen and learn

In fact I found the site whilst doing a search for a guitar (Rickenbacker). Not sure yet if it's still available, but in any case I'm glad I stumbled across the place.

Wow! I didn't know _we_ had a discussion forum. I've been playing bass since the 1980s. My first lefty bass was an Ibanez Roadstar II. I've since played a Fender P-bass, '77 Rick 4001 and an Ernie Ball MM Stingray.

One of my favorite stories...I was out of the country. A band was playing a a gig near my parents' house. The bassist--a lefty--had some mishap. I forget what--but his bass was out of commission. Now this is in some small town in rural Virginia. He's playing a gig in a tiny college frat house. He doesn't have a backup and thinks he's screwed. But someone at the party knows me and knows I'm left handed. They make the short trek to my parent's place, pick up one of my basses and the gig is saved.

6 months later I'm back in the country and find the most gracious thank you note in my bass case.

I look forward to this forum!

I had a similar story, without a similar ending.

There was a band that broke up several years ago (which reunited late last year for some gigs) called the Hot Snakes. Amazing band with a lefty bassist. The band never was a full-time adventure for those involved, and split up because they lived on separate coasts. The three West Coasters formed the Night Marchers (with the lefty bassist now playing guitar) and the lonely East Coaster formed Obits. A couple of years ago they were doing a joint secret show at a small bar in NYC. Of course everyone was asking them to play Hot Snakes songs since all four were in the same room. The lefty bassist/guitarist said he couldn't do it because he only had lefty guitars with him. I told him I live a few blocks away and I have several lefty basses, but then he said he couldn't remember the songs! When the two bands played together a month later in California, they played a few Hot Snakes songs. I was lied to ... twice! I have tickets to see them twice in the coming months, a good consultation prize.

For my second year professional uni project, I have decided to to see if the amount of lefty instruments available, is proportionate to the amount of players, and what all the contributing factors are, aswell as some research into the left/right brain hemisphere argument.

I'll do doing a heap of market research, aswell as researching the ratio of lefty's to righty's in musical environments AND in non-musical environments, and also I will be asking the main manufacturers how they do their market research, and potentially BRING ABOUT CHANGE.
