CIJ Jazz V question

Post by Matt R. »

So I got my Jazz V today and all looks well. I’ll get to play around with it further this evening, but I notice the bridge has a shallow rout beneath it. It’s super clean, looks factory and seems to cause no problems, but I’ve never seen this on a bass, especially a Fender.
Would any of you know about these, and if that rout is supposed to be factory?

I'm not sure what to look for in your picture, where exactly is it?

It’s a shallow rout that the bridge is actually sitting in. I was trying to get a shot of the edge of the rout but I guess it didn’t turn out to be a great image. Ha. It looks clean though. I’m guessing it’s original to the bass.

I'm almost positive G&L bass bridges are anchored to the body via a deep route to which the bridge is set into and bolted.
Our resident G&L experts might want to weigh in on the intended purpose in design and resulting tone.

I can't view the image in its full size, it shows as a clickable thumbnail but when I click it I just get a black background.

How deep would you say it looks?

The depth is less than the thickness of the bridge plate. It’s just sort of barely recessed into the body. It looks perfect so I think it’s from the factory

Here it is. I’m pretty convinced it’s a factory rout. It’s super clean.

Wow, I've never seen that before! Looks really clean and nicely done. I went Googling for it and found more examples. Like this Aerodyne Jazz body:

I wonder if it's standard practice or if these were perhaps factory-modded and sold as B-stock because the saddles had to be bottomed out during setup. Either way, it looks well-executed and judging from your first picture it appears to be hardly noticeable.

The usual remedy for setup issues is a neck shim, isn't it? Chiseling/machining out a bridge seat would seem to be an order of magnitude more effort.

Definitely curious.

I was able to ask someone else who has one. It’s a normal rout for sure

Thanks, it’s a stunner. Getting an actual celluloid tort guard for it though. The faux printed tort is awful and cheap looking

@ Matt, not sure about the rout. Here is one from The Music Zoo and the bridge looks like it's flush on top (zoom in).... Or my eyes are seeing something different. I was questioning the bridge from your photos but it appears correct.

Either way if its clean and the saddles can get close I wouldn't worry about it.

Very nice Bass BTW!!

It's there, you can see the rout in this picture:

Music Zoo say it's 11lb 12oz - pretty hefty!

Thanks guys! Yeah I noted above that I found out the rout is normal. And when I removed the bridge it was easy to see where the masking was for painting and whatnot (kind of like you typically see in neck pockets).
And I haven’t weighed mine but it’s probably 10.5-11 pounds. Stout but not really heavy.
