G&L is reviving CLF Research, a company Leo had back in the Musician days, and its first project is a reissue of the '81 L2000 w front mounted control plate and old style headstock (no can opener). There is talk of an L1000 reissue along the same lines. No word on lefty availability yet. They are also going to launch a custom shop for special order guitars and basses. Not a lot of details but sounds a little like it's modeled after Fender's custom shop. There's a thread on the Rocket Music forum on Talkbass if you are interested. I like the look of the reissue L2Ks they are showing at NAMM - not the I need any more basses

I LOVeD the CAR L2k it looks really nice.
I also asked about lefties and they said they just released them but it will be available in lefty as well but not right away.

They already build so much to order and leave so many options open for the customer to specify!

Couldn't tell from the pic (despite the size, LOL), but I wonder if they're going for fully accurate reproductions on these, including the bi-cut neck and 3-bolt neck joints!

They're 6 bolt necks. I checked for that too.

I though the whole reason for the headstock change was a legal issue with Fender, however. So how are they getting away with it now?

We wondered that too and our best guess was that the trade mark that blocked them before has expired. Not sure why it needs to be connected to a different sub company of G+L though.

A little more detail on these

The CLF instruments are only going to be done in limited batches.
The current run for the '81 style L2000 is a total of 50, I asked about lefties and at the moment they aren't planned in this run. They may happen in the future.

Based on my conversation with my G&L rep, I think we'll see an L1000 next.

I'm still waiting on more detail in regard to the custom shop options, but from what I was told there are going to be some very specific differences such as a specific luthier building your instrument instead of the current team building approach.
