It's actually really funny because before i had the red one, i started out on a righty black 4003. you know, the whole "righty strung lefty" thing. that belonged to my uncle. it was uncomfortable as hell, but it got the job done . he still has it and it's back to being righty

I also don't think you guys can tell whats going on with the truss rod cover... look very closely

IIRC, the word 'Rickenbacker' was backwards or upside-down on the trussrod cover back in the day.

that would explain my truss rod cover, it was made by a guy my gradfather knew who once worked for the Rickenbacker plant back in the day, and they got the cover as a suprise for me.

I thought this was pretty cool. my brother made this for me in his computer graphics class. I don't know why he picked a red fretboard though. but it still looks cool to me.

Yep, same on my Rick. It's due to the heavy lacquer-like finish that Rick uses to treat their necks.

Question Rebel (and anyone else who plays an older Rick): do you still have the cap installed for the bridge pickup or have you removed it? I removed mine, and it really fattened the tone up. The newer 4003s have the Vintage Tone Circuit with the push/pull treble tone control to give you both options/sounds. I'm wondering if you can buy this tone circuitry/knob as a simple mod to an older Rick.

I did remove mine. but i do put it back on on occasion, and Jeroen, thats my friend's Ric, he also has one, I like to sometimes claim it as my own because our Rics feel exactly the same , so we sometimes swap sometimes for shows. it really messes up the crowd sometimes . but mine has no inlays. That's correct, my '08 4003 has that feature. Pulling out the tonepot of the bridge pickup engages a capacitor that cuts some lows on the bridge pickup and emphasises the highs and high mids, like an old 4001.

FYI, Rick sells an aftermarket kit with the push/pull pot to engage/disengage the cap for older Ricks ($15). I just ordered mine from The Music Connection, which is where I bought my '79 Rick 4001 almost 10 years ago!:
