1999 Marleaux Consat 4-string JJ

Hi everyone,

I am selling my unique 4-string of the German Luthier Marleaux. It has an alder body and a maple neck with three walnut stripes and dark palisander fretboard. Equipped with two Bartolini J-PUs and an active/passive 2-Band EQ.

Bought this bass in 1999 and used to play it since then on stage and in studio – therefore it has a few dings and dongs on the body, but nothing which would affect the sound. The neck is straight and has almost no fretwear. The lightweight bass feels great to play and gives you a wide range from percussive and crisp slap sounds to this typical jazzbass growl.

Price is 1.150 EUR / 1.220 USD incl. a durable gig-bag (Current MSRP: 2.200 EUR).

Wow, I'd love to have a go at this! (Despite having no more room in my apartment! )

Maybe they aren't the same at all, but I had a bass with Bartolini jazz pickups.

I like Marleaux basses, even though I've never seen one. The Diva is particularly beautiful. I believe this is probably a VERY well made bass. But what's the deal with the upside down mounting of the Barts? Hasn't this been a topic of discussion before?

I never really understood either. On most Bartolinis I've seen the wiring of the pickups was located in the center of the pickup, so there shouldn't ben any problem mounting it the correct way. Unless it has something to do with staggering of the polepieces, ik they have individual poles?

Found a page on the Bartolini website that might point to the reason the pickups need to be installed upside down for lefties. Click on "#12. What's Inside a Pickup? Structures and Windings"; scroll down a bit, and you'll see a diagram for what they call their "J" and"K" Structures, and you can see because of the angle of the coils, they would be upside-down if the name was in the traditional readable position... hope this helps explain the mystery of Bartolini's on left hand basses.....

Acutally I never really questioned the pickup-setting It just sounded great and I trust Gerald Marleaux and his team - they mastered the art of creating exiting basses.

Unfortunately it has to go, as I don't play it too much anymore. It's a great sounding instrument and the Marleaux is simply too nice to keep it hanging on the wall.

that's right. the bolt-on neck reached down to the PU. If you look at the screws on the back of the bass, you can see, how far the neck reaches into the body.

@ fivebass52: good find, although I'm not sure that having a slightly differently angled coil would affect the tone that much. I could see it if the coils were designed to reproduce different frequencies. Anybody else have any thoughts on this? Sorry stone_free if this diverts from your Marleaux for sale thread but I'm curious about how the pickup configuration on your bass works in light of the visually "upside down" nature of their installation.
