Sabre Score

Post by Matt R. »

bhunt's Sabre arrived today and I'm pretty excited about it. It'll take some work getting it tip top and gig-ready, but it'll be a fun project. It sounds really, really good. And props to Brian for a stress free transaction. Highly recommended seller.

Awesome! I'm glad you like it.

He definitely did me right with the Dan Ransom!

I predict this will be the #1 Leftybassist score of 2015.

Just got the electronics sorted out (at least I'm pretty certain). The neck definitely needs serious TLC, but even with the work it may take to make it new again, it's gonna still be a ridiculous deal.

The tone of this thing is just sick. I love it.

Ha! Well, hopefully there will be cause to be jealous once I get it back. I just shipped it off to Glaser in Nashville to have the neck taken care of. I think this will end up being a hell of a bass. Despite the neck issues it feels really good shape-wise and it's very comfy overall. And it sounds awesome.

Great score, killer basses. :) i think the Sabre has, arguably, the best slap tone of any bass Musicman/EB ever produced.

From the research I've done, it seems that left handed Pre-EB Musicman Stingrays and Sabres were produced in a single production run in February/March of 1980. So I'm guessing yours is from around that time period with a serial # somewhere around C0049xxx? I've also seen about 3 times as many lefty Pre-EB Sabres as I have Stingrays, which is strange when you consider that the Stingray is far more popular. (Still pretty rare though). Interesting that your neck has issues. The one I bought from Southpaw ages ago also has/had neck issues, i.e. buzzing frets around 3rd-4th frets on E string. I eliminated most of the problem myself playing around with the truss rod and saddle height, but it's still not set perfect or up as optimally as some of my other basses.

This one just has old age problems. S-curve on the bass side, huge dip on the treble side. It's jacked, but it'll be planed, refretted etc. This bass has been through serious warfare.
