Question for you G&L guys

Post by jersey bluesdude »

I'm thinking about ordering a new LB 100. (similar to this one only lefty of course) How much smaller is the body compared to a Fender P ? G&L's web says it's "slightly streamlined" Thanks. http://www.atlantabassgallery.com/4-str ... sonic-blue

I think that is right. Jimmy had Southpaw had a beautiful redburst with maple neck one hanging there. I would say it is slightly smaller than a regular P bass and hangs slightly differently than a pbass. If you have ever played the SB-2 it is bigger than that in that it has a bit more lower bout mass. My USA jazz deluxe reminded me of the sb-2 in that it had a downsized body. I did not think the g&l was significantly smaller and lighter, but if I looked for it I could take notice. That was just my off the shelf impression of messing with it over 2 days while doing a shopping trip in Houston for work and for a guitar.

I have 3 G&L's, one of them is the like the one you noted, I cannot tell the difference between a P Bass when I play but I did want to note that all G&L's are amazing basses. For me they can bury me with my L-2000 as that is one of my favorite basses in the heard. Not sure if it's the same one in the thread by but I got my Burst with Maple L-2000 at Southpaw a few years ago when I was in Houston on business.

I own an LB-100. I've never owned a Fender P, though I have played them, and I would echo what you've heard, as well as the more detailed comments above. I find the LB-100 to be extremely comfortable, more so than a Fender P.

Don't hesitate. The LB-100 is the bass that killed my GAS (for awhile, anyway!). It's just an amazing, amazing instrument.

The body on the LB-100 is a little slimmer and smoother than a typical P-Bass. I also find that the upper-fret access is greatly improved as well.

Tone wise, they smoke most current Fender P-basses, and even a bunch of the current G&L stuff as well.
I did a shoot out with an LB-100, a 2009 Am. Std P-bass, an L-2000, and M-2000; the LB-100 edged out the other basses pretty easily just from how warm and rich sounding the pickups are.

Currently I'm having a major dilemma of whether I should get another SB-2, a JB-2, or an LB-100.
Pretty sure it's going to be an LB-100, they just have that "THING" going on with them.

Thanks to all who replied for the info. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna pull the trigger on the LB 100 this week. I had a newer SB-2 and really liked the neck and the build quality. The pickups were just too hot for the kind of stuff I'm playing nowadays. The LB 100 should be a good fit tone wise and since I'm pretty much a Precision guy I think it will fill the bill. Thanks again.

I cannot discuss the LB100, but I had an '82 Fender P and still have an '87 SB-1, after they started splitting the pups. The G&L has a slightly smaller body but not "inches smaller," just slightly. The craftsmanship is slightly better in the G&L, just better fit, "tighter," more solid feel over all. The tone is to die for. Much, much hotter (passive) pickups than on the Fender.

But enough about me. What's the status update?

Well...

Solved my issue: I ordered a JB-2 and an LB-100
JB-2 is in Sonic Blue on alder with a maple board, LB-100 is Bel Air Green on Alder with Rosewood and a mint guard.

I might have a problem
