what would a '73 p bass cost?
I recently began to like the idea of owning a bass from the year I was born, 1973, I think a p bass would be the way to go. I haven't come across one so I wonder what one might go for? I wouldn't want a wasted piece of garbage but at the same time not mint either. I'd like some character. Any thoughts?

Is say you'd be looking at the 2 grand range easily.

You just need to be patient and wait for a deal but around 2k seems realistic.

Went to eBay, went to advanced search, put in 1973 Fender P Bass, clicked on sold listings, and hit search... these are just a few of the 73's that came up...
This one sold back in March for $1975... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fender-P-Bass-P ... 7675.l2557
Here's another one that sold for $2850... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1973-Fe ... 7675.l2557
So yes, $2000 is the starting point.....

I'm sure there is the lefty premium and ofcource actually finding one. Anyone know how rare that year or era are?
Re: what would a '73 p bass cost?
I was also born in '73 and have been keeping my eye out for a decent P or J from that year as well.
In 10 years or so, I think I've seen two P's and one or two J's from that year that were for sale. I don't think '73 was a big production year for lefties... there aren't many around.

I had a 73 Jazz for a while that was really cool. I bought it for a steal, later sold it for a lot more. It's popped up for sale a couple times since. It was ash/natural, maple neck with black blocks & binding and had Ray Price's autograph.

I got my '73 a few years ago. I was extremely lucky. Got it for less than $2000. I'd probably need $3000 to part with it, but I considered it to be the Holy Grail of basses. Nothing else sounds and feels like it.
Here are some pics from my album:

I have seen a few '73 pop up in the last couple of years, more than any other early-seventies year, so I'd say that actually '73 was a strong year for lefty builds, but still in general, very rare. I bought another one awhile ago but it was a dog, and I know that a few members here have '73s. . . Not only that, but most of the '73s I've seen have "A" neck in them (1.5" width) which is even more rare. Never seen any other lefty vintage P-Bass with an A neck from any other year.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm selling my Spector and moving towards finding one. Just seems like such a cool thing to have
Re: what would a '73 p bass cost?
I hope you have other basses. You could be waiting a long time.

Re: what would a '73 p bass cost?
That's Pretty sweet if it were only a p bass
Re: what would a '73 p bass cost?
My P bass is a '73. Bought it about 10 years ago for $550 w case from Ludlow St. Guitars on (surprise) Ludlow St. in the east village, Manhattan.
I just wandered in looking for lefties and it was there, apparently hanging there forever, along with a left handed BC Rich green acrylic Warlock bass that I thought was too stupid and "metally" looking to bother acquiring (doh!). I've never seen another one. But anyway, the knucklehead who owned my P bass stripped the original SB finish off but didn't bother to remove the pick guard first, so the SB finish is still intact under the pick guard! The bass is beaten to hell, but I kinda love it for that reason. lol:

Really sweet. That's what makes it cool, battle damage, scars and character. I wouldn't want a new looking one. Hopefully I'll come across one one day
Re: what would a '73 p bass cost?
PJ: nice bass you got there!
As for the 73 in the OP's post, that's way overpriced for a stripped down bass IMO.

I think he means the 73 Jazz I posted from gbase and I agree that's alot of wood for a bass with the original finish stripped off. http://www.gbase.com/gear/fender-jazz-b ... 73-naturalwolfkeller wrote:Which one is over priced?
