Lefty Upright Bass

Any recommendations on lefty uprights? I'm looking to get back into it. I owned a Strunal (factory lefty) that I liked, but it's long gone and I'm wondering about other makers, such as Englehardt and Upton. Thanks.

I know nothing of uprights, although I thought this one looked nice. The pound is pretty weak at the moment, so I imagine this would work out as a bargain;

I haven't had any experience with a lefty upright either, but the $500 Upton conversion charge sounds like a great deal.

This gives me hope. Until now I'd sort of given up on finding a lefty upright, as every one I'd seen had been some custom job that some one paid $10k for.

Upton looks promising. I do understand, if I can believe Ken Smith, that Upton bought some exclusive ad space on Talkbass and there's a lot of positive comments about Upton there. Just a grain of salt. But i love the features and the finish on that Hawkes (Hybrid) bass.

Bob is the man for upright info, He can order left handed uprights.

I played Double Bass in high school and while you can have a right handed instrument restrung lefty it will not sound as good (because of the internal construction) and the curvature of the fingerboard will be wrong. Considering what you will be spending anyway, you might as well spend a little more and have a true lefthanded instrument.

I've heard good things about Palatinos as well. But also not an acoustic upright. Did you need to plane the neck at all?

Speaking of converting lefties, I contacted Bob Gollihur about converting an NS Design Wav, and he said that he inquired about that specifically and was told by Steinberger that the neck would require planing. Andrew, didn't you say that it was a simple conversion that didn't require planing?

I have a factory left handed Christopher Hybrid (Carved top / Laminate back and Sides) in excellent condition and definitely "warm" (Wood is aged nicely).. I would be interested in selling it.. But, won't ship it.. I'm in Philadelphia... Let me know if you're interested...

Yes, the NS WAV is an easy flip. I was told the same thing by NS, that the fingerboard is curved to accommodate the string gauges so flipping the strings requires planing the board. I took my WAV to Mike Kinal to have the board planed and he showed me the board was perfectly symmetrical and didn't require planing to flip. So we flipped it without touching the fingerboard and it plays fine that way. I really recommend the WAV. The only thing I caution about them is try them to see the output first. Some aren't set up correctly inside and the piezos are very quiet and anemic. I was told by a couple different stores this is how the bass is because of the passive piezo system. Not so! Properly set-up/assembled WAV basses are about as loud as a regular passive bass.
