Wow, that is rare and beautiful. John, the headstock looks like that because of the nitro finish. That's how old nitro flakes away or develops streaks. I can't believe how many '60s Jazz bass we've seen lately for sale . . . Wish I had 50 grand to buy every '60s Fender lefty that became available. . .

IMO, that's still a big chunk of chingazola for a CBS era bass, even if it's a custom color.

and then there's this: "He said the neck of the bass is straight but not perfect". If he's the finest luthier the seller could find, this probably is double super secret code for "the truss rod ain't got no mo to give".

Despite all that, it would look good hanging on my wall ;)

Agreed. If I'm considering plunking down that kind of money (and I'm not), I fully expect to see closeup photos of the innards, neck stamp, pots numbers, etc. Also this:

"Under the pickguard it shows a S impressed into the body..."

Impressed? All the custom shop specials I've seen over the years simply had either "special" stamped or a handwritten letter S (usually in pencil) on them. Not saying this one isn't legit, just never heard of it before.

Maybe they had to press the pencil a little harder this time?

Legit or not, that is a nice looking bass right there. It's very "period" looking. I'd love to have me something like that in my collection.

I wonder what the seller means by this:

"[the luthier] said the neck of the bass is not perfect although every fret plays all the way down the neck with good action"

The term "not perfect" can mean a lot of things. Some clarification would be good, especially when considering their asking price.

Twisting was common in those years. Could have a slight twist or uneven fret ends looking down the neck. No telling unless you see it in your hands. This is one of many fears of buying a vintage Fender sight unseen.

Sure is purty though.... and the mushroom sticker just adds to the vibe. If I was serious about buying this bass, I'd want the phone number of the luthier, and speak to him directly to see if he could describe exactly what the problem with the neck is, and if it can be brought back to straight/original condition. That's a lot of money to spend on a bass that may not be able to be brought fully back to like-new playability...

At least it has a 14-day return policy, which should give the buyer enough time to have it checked out....

That makes sense. I just wish they actually said in there "xxx is what's wrong with the neck" instead of what they actually did say. It's still a pretty kickass bass, though, and like fivebass52 said that mushroom decal really seals the vibe. I'm not a stickers-on-my-guitar type of guy, but I'm also willing to make exceptions if the exceptions include awesomeness.

You bought that? A lefty custom colour Jazz with matching headstock from '67, that's my birth year! Please post pictures of this beauty for me to drool on... I wish I had won in the lotto so I could buy that bass...

Thanks for the comments! This bass belongs to a friend, but I'm taking care of it for a while. I had to do a lot of work on the neck to get it back, and removing this ugly mushroom sticker has been a pain :)

nice. What was wrong with the neck and what did you have to do to correct it?

The truss rod has probably never been used during those 46 years... so there was few deformations on the fingerboard. A lot of fret job, and forcing the truss rod without breaking it ;)

Yves, nice job removing the mushroom sticker... looks like it was never there! Also glad to hear you were able to get the neck back in shape. Considering the price, it was risky to take a chance on this bass, but sounds like it's a player again - well done!
