Did Fender Japan make a lefty Geddy Lee Jazz?

Post by andrew »

I thought I'd heard that they do/did make a lefty Geddy Lee Jazz bass, or at least a black blocks/binding neck on their 70's RI Jazz.

Is this true, or no?

Not that I've ever heard of... I was on a hunt for a lefty Fender j-bass with a maple fingerboard/blocks & binding for quite a while and I never ran across anything like that.

Why? Why?!!! If they can do this in Japan, why can they not do it here in the US? Are there that many more lefties in Japan than here? Would it hurt their US sales to bring all of those sweet lefties to the US? Anyone have any wisdom on this?

In doing research online, I have read that approximately 10% of the world's population is left handed, with Canada and the US having anywhere from 10-13% lefties. Surprisingly, less than 1% of Japan's population is left handed. However, Fender Japan markets to all of Asia (and parts of Europe), where the world's largest populations reside. If you consider over a billion people in Asia alone, the percentage is probably higher. China, not surprisingly, has the largest population of lefties. Even if it was only 10% (and a smaller percentage of that population who play guitar/bass), you could still be talking about a LOT of people.

With all the lefty MIJ offerings over the years, I'm actually surprised Fender Japan has yet to reissue a lefty Mustang Bass.

Don't forget... 10%-13% of all people might be lefties.

But that means, an even SMALLER percentage of those people play left handed.

I've heard that as little as 1%-3% of guitar and bass players play left handed.

The thing is, in this the age of international online retail, it isn't hard to obtain one of these MIJ lefties if you really want one. It's just expensive.

Good point PJ about Japanese lefties. They actually dissuade left-handedness here, kinda like they did in medieval Europe. I have first hand experience trying to encourage my sons to use their left hands & become right brained, artistic, highly intelligent, etc but my Japanese wife saw to it that it wouldn't happen! Plus, think of all the great basses & guitars they coulda inherited from me.........oh well, Actually I'm also a righty who plays lefty, but I do have some natural lefty in me, unlike most righties. Blame Paul Macca!
