That's a 4001CS Chris Squire Limited Edition. Only 1000 were made, of which only 2 or 3 were lefties.

Semi-interesting story:
Went to a guitar show in Austin in '91, Southpaw Guitars' booth had the CS for $999. Didn't have that kinda cash so I bought an '80 4003FG for $800(with a $400 loan from my best friend). Went back to next year's show('92), the bass was still there, still couldn't afford it. A few months later I got a $1000 bonus at work, immediately called Southpaw, they still had the CS, next morning I drove the 400 miles to Houston and bought it.

Just kidding, of course. That's a rare and incredible bass, and it seems you got it at a good price (although I can't really judge how much 999 USD really was back then). I'm sure a 1980 4001 would fetch a lot less than a 4001CS today!

FWIW, one British pound was worth about 3.25 USD or thereabouts way back then. DId they even have Euro's in 92?

Are you kidding? that's a great story! i can't imagine a CS hanging around for a year now, unless the seller wanted more than $12K for it.

I imagine it being a lefty is the reason it hung around so long.

Have you noticed a difference in sound or playibilty with the CS in comparision to your other Ric basses?

It has the "clearest" tone of the three, 'course that could be that I keep fresh roundwounds on it, while the '80 4003 has old rounds and the '82 4001S has flats. The neck seems slightly wider than the other two.

Yup. Also back in those days, it was not a big deal to get your hands on a lefty ric. Sometimes it was tough to give them away. They weren't in vogue like they are now.

Nope, the Euro was introduced in January 2002 :)
At this moment, one British pound is 1.09 Euro and 1.41 dollar. The pound is still at an all time low.

I own a Red Rickenbacker too, though it's got the standard neck plus black binding which I prefer to the all Red:

The 2 Red Lefty Rickenbackers on this thread are the only ones I know exist, or are they? I believe that Rebel's photos are not his nor are they leftys, they are right handed versions of pictures belonged to other owners which you can easily find by searching google images, he has flopped/reversed the pics to make them look like lefties, so does he own a Red Rick lefty at all?

Question: how come the Ric in the pictures in this thread has no fingerboard inlays, and the one in your avatar does have sharkfins?

I believe that his avatar is a reversed -flopped photo- image of a right handed version. You can see the triangle inlays in the Avatar are the right way round as opposed to lefty Ricks traditionally having upside down triangle inlays like mine (in the post above). Also the truss rod cover is reversed.

Here's the original photo of the righty I believe -from google images- and it's flopped avatar version:

Also the other photo he showed of his Red Rick is also a flopped image of a righty which had been sold by a well known Rickenbacker dealer. Here is a higher res version of the " original" clearly showing it's a righty:

so are they really his? there seems to be contradictions with the 2 images of the Red Ricks he posted from other web sources which are reversed photos of rightys and not leftys at all? Also the 2 images he shows are different versions of the Red Rick released by Rickenbacker one has black binding with a rosewood fretboard and the other has no binding but a painted red fretboard. One is a normal version and the other is the Redneck which is a "special" limited edition. Also Rickenbacker make proper lefty versions of truss rod covers.

Is Rebel a fraud or does he just not have pics of his own, please explain?

Sorry but I just don't like being misled when I know these photos are from other people who I know from other bass forums.

I suspected this too, it was a slightly fishy tale, but I never actually did a search. Thanks for the heads-up.

yeah, he doesn't seem to have defended himself on this and there were too many contradictions when he talked about the fretboard etc., he then claimed his friend had another red lefty too and that was his avatar. There just aren't that many of these Red ones out there and the only other ones I've seen have all been right handed. I've long suspected mine's unique as a lefty -it wasn't a popular colour choice back in the 80's/90's- but you never know. Why people feel the need to bullshit about such trivial stuff I'll never know.
