Apparently it's synthetic, hollow, and has a lower resonant frequency than wood, resulting in enormous bottom end and low mids.

Too bad such a well-thought out and well-designed bass had to be equipped with an external hexaphonic midi pickup. I'm sure there are much more elegant solutions for that (integrated in the bridge saddles).
