Cool bass. I want one of those at some point.

*Unrelated question for AzWhoFan:

How did you make the "click here" link? I never knew how to do that

When you are in the 'post reply' page, hover the mouse over the URL box. You'll see two ways to display a link. Use the second one.
Which is basically adding an ='s sign and the link to the first half of the URL HTML tag.
i.e.
add your text here

Does anyone have one of these? I've been on/off the fence about buying one since they were new. They are P-basses with and extra J-pickup right?

I had a very nice one about 7 years ago, black w/tort, RW 'board. It was nice, wish I still had it. Don't really know what I was thinking when I sold it and a few others in a "purge".
Actually, it looked just like this one:

i have one thats been tweeked - its a 99 - great well balanced bass -
i pulled the P neck and put an early 80's MIJ jazz neck on it, put dimarzio vintage pu's and added a tone styler tone knob.
tons of options for tone
i run it strung thru the body
i also accelerated the wear on it by pulling off alot of the poly coat - seemed to open up the tone a bit...

I own one, with Norstrand PUs and natural body (sunburst was awfully conserved due to stickers glue). The bass is light and with rosewwod fretboard, so that quite a round sound, not bright and ultraprecise, like a 70's body with mapple fretboard. Though, that's a very good bass. I was thinking about changing the neck, to get closer to a 60's JB neck, but one luthier is doing the job for me on the original neck.

(still a pity I cannot see ebay's from here - post image on the thread!)

Top, I love the look on that vintage bass. Most people see a "roadworn" look and think a crappy bass but i see otherwise

So it sounds like everyone here has heavily modified theirs. Can I take that as a sign that it's not actually that good a bass stock?

Not neccessarily true. I remember reading lots of posts over at TB where folks loved them just the way they are. I've never owned one, so I don't have first hand knowldge of the bass.

My overall sense of it is we have a disproportionate amount of fearless-bass-tweaking-lefties on this board ;)

Mine was totally stock, as are 99% of my basses. I don't buy basses that I don't like.
