Up for auction through U2’s Music Rising charity. He used this bass extensively on the Wings Back to Egg album and subsequent tours.

I HATE that bass. It was the beginning of the trek away from the Ric. And I am going to blurt blasphemy, but as much as I love his Höfner and mine, it's not the most versatile bass in the world. Not that the Ric is either, but I prefer it's punchy, distinctive tones. Them dayz iz gone...

As of right now, the bid is $20,000.00.

He at least did a 30-second spot authenticating it, which is a lot more than you see with most of these sales/auctions trying to capitalize on a name. It was a nice little lick, too.

Paul with the Yamaha BB1200S performing with Rockestra at the Concert for the People of Kampuchea (1979). Hard to believe this footage has never officially been released on DVD or Blu Ray.

Although I can work my ass off and learn Sir Paul's bass lines, I can practice from now until Doomsday, and Never be able to sing like that... Damn! What a great singer, as well as a great bass player, he is.. :D

He is an amazing talent and makes everything look so effortless. I've been saying for years that he's one of the most underrated vocalists ever. When you watch the doc, "Get Back" you can see how easily he he can scream those sections of, "I've Got a Feeling".

That movie, more than any single thing, is responsible for me learning the bass. It was on cable constantly in 1982 when I had been doing guitar lessons for a year but after watching Kampuchea every week (with the help of VHS), I was completely enthralled by the bass for the first time in my life. Whoever booked those shows must have loved the bass! Look at the line-up:

John Deacon - Queen
Pete Farndon - The Pretenders
Paul Simenon - The Clash
Paul McCartney - Wings
Horace Panter - The Specials
Bruce Thomas - Elvis Costello & The Attractions
Nick Lowe - Rockpile
John Entwistle - The Who

All of them either stellar bassists, incredibly charismatic musicians, or both! Is it any wonder I wanted to be like them?

I don’t really hate the Yamaha. I just hate the loss of punch in his bass playing he got with the Ric. I’ve almost worn out my copy of Kampuchea. I wonder whether Macca has vetoed a reissue or whether one of the other acts had a problem with it. Lot of major players on that wonderful record.

Agreed! It's almost as if the producers came to me personally and said, "We're putting together a benefit concert of your favorite artists"...only they didn't cone to me. ;) I was heavily into e very one of those artists at the time.

It sold for a whopping $471,900 apparently making it the most expensive bass at an auction EVER.

Holy smokes, that's just ridiculous  But when you're "filthy rich", you can have whatever you want...

I can't imagine the Hofner going anywhere but the Smithsonian or the V&A. (Or a museum in Liverpool?).

I hope whoever it is learns "Goodnight Tonight." It's going to sound exactly right if done properly

Forget my previous post, for this price Paul should have to stay at my house for a week and sing Golden Slumbers to me at bedtime each night until I fall asleep.

From Loudwire:

Macca's bass sale was part of "Guitar Icons: A Music Instrument Auction to Benefit Music Rising," held at Los Angeles' Van Eaton Galleries on Dec. 11. Launched to help support live music in New Orleans, it was organized by the charity Music Rising, a New Orleans music outreach co-founded in 2005 by U2 guitarist the Edge and producer Bob Ezrin.

Don't say it. You can say anything, but DON'T say Goodnight Tonight! ;)
