Good news for lefties looking for a 12er. (I remember the rare lefty Pinnick Hamer Chaparall from 20? years ago):

I've been eyeing this (as well as the 8-string Schecter at GC). Would definitely love to try one of these one day. I don't have strong feelings about whether 8 vs 12.

But I do have feelings of the relative position of the low vs high strings. As a fingerplucker (wow, that sounds like a bad word somehow), my intuition wants the high string to be lower such that my finger hits it first. But I guess these are designed with pick players in mind, who would prefer the high string on top.

I play an 8 string (octave) bass a ton, and I exclusively play fingerstyle. I had the same inclination about the order of the strings at first too. But after talking to Bill W - who helped me with some parts to get it all built - he convinced me not to reverse the string order. If you put the octave string at the top, it does make it slightly more prominent on your plucking hand. But it makes it VERY difficult to fret with your right hand properly. The natural curve of your finger makes it very tough to get that octave string pressed down if they are reversed. Believe me, it's hard enough to fret cleanly with the strings in the typical order. You don't need the extra challenge and it still sounds great to me.

Interesting. Thank you, that's very helpful to know. I wasn't considering the fretting hand so much, but now that you mention it, that makes complete sense.

Doesn't help my GAS, though :D

Here's a floor model listed at a decent discount. Pictures aren't of the bass itself, so it may be worth a call/message to the store:
