I also like it when my E string lives where my A string should.

It’s got enough room to tweak the neck to properly align it. Bad quality control? Yep. But my ‘74 has a similar neck pocket and has no issues. Also, yeah that price is ridiculous.

It really is comical/annoying how shitty Fender's QC was back then. I've seen so many inexcusable instruments from that mid-late 70s era. I have a '77 T bass with a neck pocket you could drive a mack truck through. But, since this bass is 45 years old, so let's charge $5000 for it anyway.

The only solution I've considered for my misaligned neck and this one without re-drilling/re-positioning the bridge would be to replace the bridge with one that has string spacing saddle adjustment capabilities. (Hipshot KickAss bridge?). Of course, if you installed that, the strings would no longer sit directly between each of the double poles of a J PUP, though I'm not sure that would affect your sound in any way.

Or, for $5000, you could buy 3 Am Pro J basses that are infinitely better made than this.

Actually, the misaligned neck is fairly common on older Fender basses. Every one of mine does that from time to time. Just loosen the neck screws and realign it and tighten it up. Pretty simple fix and not that big of a deal. $4500 is a bit steep but not by much. Chances are though, it’s owned by a professional working musician who’s out of work right now (and probably for the unforeseeable future) and like the rest of us who pay our bills with our basses, needs money to live. He is accepting offers on it so he or she is open to negotiating. It’s a very cool bass regardless of it’s idiosyncrasies.
(And the chrome pickup cover is actually a P bass cover- not a J bass cover)

It's a bit strange that he didn't post a shot of the guitar that shows the entire fretboard and or a shot of the whole guitar--at least I didn't see one. I'm not seeing large chunk of that neck. Perhaps the guy would add them if asked.

It seems to me that those should be the main shots of the ad.
